Multimedia Containers and Codecs

Glosary

Supported Media

Notes

  • WDTV supports a wide variety of codecs and containers.
  • Unsupported codecs or containers need to be re-encoded and/or re-muxed using media tools on a computer.
    • Re-encoding is a slow, resource-intensive process that typically results in some reduction in video quality.
    • Re-muxing (i.e. multiplexing) is fast and lossless and is used to add/remove features to a video container.
      • Secondary audio tracks.
      • Subtitles
    • These two processes are different in nature, and one is not meant to be a better option for the other.

HOW TOs

  • I renamed my XXX.WMV file to AVI and WDTV still says it is an unsupported format
Changing either the file name or extension will not change internal content or file structure.
You will likely need to re-encode your file using media tools to convert video or audio codecs to supported formats.
You may also need to re-mux to combine the converted audio and video files into a supported container. For example, a file using the unsupported Windows Media 7 video codec should be re-encoded to WMV3 and then re-muxed into a WDTV-supported AVI format container.
  • How can I determine the codec used in a file ??
you can use G-spot or Mediainfo
  • How can I re-encode/convert movie ?
If you have a powerful PC try Handbrake or Super converter or AVIdemux. I prefer mencoder or ffmpeg
  • How can I re-mux content ?
It depends on container you have to have right tool or understand how to do for example mplayer -dumpraw and MKVtoolnix and mencode+gui is powerful combination.
  • How can I determine container in file ??
    Use G-spot or Mediainfo
  • How can I play my movie when WDTV says “unsupported format”?
Re-encode if the the video or audio codecs within the container are not supported. Re-mux if the container is not supported.
  • How can I play WMV files ?
WDTV only plays WMV9 or VC-1 codecs. Simple or Main profiles WMV1 (WMV7) or WMV2 (WMV8) are not supported. The old MP43 MS-MPEG4 codec is also not supported. DiVX/XViD files are OK.
  • How can I play VOB files ?
The WDTV supports unencrypted VOB files. VOB2MPG is one tool that can convert VOBs.
  • How can I play .rmvb files ?
This format is not supported. You can re-encode content with mencoder+meGUI to a supported container such as AVI/MKV/MP4
  • How can I play Youtube movies ?
YouTube uses the unsupported FLV container and H.263 Sorenson code. Re-encode and re-mux. Unofficial firmware providing use PC like online transcoder reported TVersity(youtube) PlayOn(hulu)
  • How can I play ASF files ?
This container does not have audio support. Use Windows Media Encoder to re-encode to the WMV3/WMV9 codec in an AVI container.
  • How can I play WMV files ?
WDTV does not support the older WMV1/WMV2 formats (aka WMV7/WMV8 codecs). Re-encode.
  • How can I play WMV-HD with audio ?
WDTV does not support WMA9 5.1 Pro. Re-encode the audio track.
  • How can I play smooth XVID ?
If the video is jerky video and you have XVID + GMC, you probably have 3 warp-point GMC. Re-encode to 1 warp point, maximum 2 points.
  • How can re-index movie ?
If you have problems using the rewind function with a movie, it is likely that the index needs fixing. I use mencoder movie.avi -oac copy -ovc copy [-idx or -forceidx] -o output.avi
  • How can I have a movie with 2 audio-tracks?
To add a secondary audio track for another language, MKVtools works well. It can add audio tracks and subtitles in a single container. I have tried mp4creator/box for MP4 files but it is not as easy to use as MKVtoolnix.
  • How can I watch an MKV movie with DTS audio without a Home Theater (no fibre/Toslink)?
It's possible to convert the DTS Audio to AC3 Audio with a tool called Popcorn AudioConverter (there are other tools that could do this), which will re-mux the movie with a secondary audio track that works via HDMI and RCA Audio Channels.
  • How can I play MP43 files (MS MPEG4v3)?
Currently there is no other way only re-encode video track to supported codec.
  • How can I have movies with 5.1 and stereo tracks
Yes, multiple audio tracks are supported. One audio track can contain multi-channel audio and a second stereo.
  • How can I spare some space on usb key for more mp3 ?
Use lower bitrates to create smaller files. For example encoding to AAC, OGG or WMA using 128kbit mp3 will result in sound similar to .aac 96kbit with a file half the size of mp3.
  • I have an iPad and WD Media player. What is the best format that will play on both?
